Practice Makes Perfect... NOPE!

Many of you know that I belong to a semi-professional chorus in Frederick, MD (I call it semi-pro because we charge for gigs but the money goes to charity). We are an auditioned chorus to ensure that we maintain a consistent quality level and I'm one of the section leaders so - I get to judge the new guys wanting to get in.

We have one gentleman who has tried several times and just never quite makes it - each time he's given feedback on the qualities needed to improve and several tips on how to do it. The next audition he sounds exactly the same and the next, etc. His response is "I just don't understand - I practice for hours every week - practice makes perfect right?".

Unfortunately not, Practice makes PERMANENT. He has several very poor habits that are so ingrained into his singing routine and his psyche that he can't break free from them. As most of you have figured out by now, only PERFECT Practice makes Perfect.

No matter the activity - music, athletics, family life, business processes - we all have certain ruts that we fall into and have difficulty approaching that activity from another angle. None of us have yet achieved perfection in any area of our lives. My premise is that we must continually look beyond our current practice and find ways to innovate - better ways to practice so to speak.

What does that mean to our club life? We need to find new and better ways to practice. I think we need to find new ways to grow our membership - new ways to serve our community - new ways to increase our revenue stream (the Trout Derby won't be here forever) - new ways to ‘practice' what it means to be a quality service organization.

Some of you have great ideas you've never shared... I'd love to hear them - (717) 552-3204 or dean@noonlions.com.
